I'm glad to be back to work but not to work with fu__ing idiots

I was sitting in the break room just a bit ago talking with 2 of my fellow workers, one who is my boss. Something was brought up about our new President and my boss said his wife had sent a joke to his phone about Obama. Then he mentioned a rope. He started laughing and then the other idiot started laughing as well. I said "What in the hell is funny about that?" They kept giggling and acting stupid so I stood up and said "I'm not listening to this shit" and stormed out of the door, all the while hollering about how ignorant they are and that they are bigots. I washed out my bowl and walked back into the break room to put it where it belongs and the one guy said "I'm sorry." I fired back and told him "you should be sorry, you're both sorry and stupid!" I am not going to listen to that kind of ignorance. Hopefully they might think about this the next time they start to talk like that. But I doubt it. I love most things about where I live but I hate.....HATE the ignorance. And I am surrounded by it. UGH!

What makes people like that? I know the answer..............ignorance, stupidity, narrow mindedness, growing up around it. No matter what the reason there is no excuse for it. Everyone can learn if they just open their eyes....and hearts. I have been known to go off on someone for this kind of stupidity.

Geez, that has my blood boiling!

I grew up around it, too. I live and work with it. It's just downright hateful. I can't stand it when some people insist on using the word "retard" constantly. Someone close to me has a brother who was labeled that his entire school life, he was in special ED, but far from retarded, anyway, the scars still remain today. After being told that story, I removed that word from my vocabulary. I never gave it any thought before, there but for the grace of God go I. Good for you for standing up for your values! We are all God's children!

Hey TB, I hear ya! I think it does nothing but point to one's lack of integrity and intelligence when they speak like that. My great grandmother used to call African Americans "colored people", even a few years ago. I can't fault her for that because she grew up in a different era and led a rather sheltered life. It wasn't meant to be malicious or condescending. But most people of our generation today know better. Hopefully over the course of Obama's presidentcy, some attitudes will change for the better! I am proud of you for saying something. So often it's hard to say anything, because you sense people who speak that way really can't see beyond their own narrow viewpoints.

Times are changing, but not fast enough I guess. At the end of the day some people will never open their minds before opening their mouths .Kudos to you for stepping up and saying something

Way to go, TB. Maybe you caused one of them, or someone close by, to take a good hard look at themselves.

The hardest part of being in KY is that we still have some really bad prejudice brewing about. I hate it when people assume that since I am white, I must enjoy jokes like that. I don't. I don't tolerate certain jokes or words around my kiddos either. I would have done the same thing. I commend you!

I agree with what Scott said. Hatred is passed down from one generation to the next. It takes education and cultural enlightenment to get rid of it. I have heard more than I care to living in SC. When someone starts in on something like this, I simply say that I don't share their views. And saying this quietly to people gives them pause. I have enough program in me to know that I can't change their minds. But I also don't have to sit around and listen.

Wow, I haven't had to hang around that level of stupidity in quite some time. Sorry you had to listen to that. Horrid! And yeah, it's not going away anytime soon. Sadly. Hopefully they won't make that kind of conversation in front of you. Who knows,, maybe they are stupid enough to make that mistake again. Sad people.

You told them exactly what they needed to hear. Lynchings, mob rule, bigotry & its strange fruit are not funny. Would they find it funny if someone suggested putting a rope around their necks?

Everytime you speak up and tell someone that it is not acceptable to make hateful remarks you plant a seed. It may not always blossom but the point is you are doing your part to cultivate peace. Racism thrives on silence. Silence appears to others as acceptance. Thank you for working to make our state a better place by voicing the truth to these people, especially your boss! Most people wouldn't have the balls to do that.
